Keep your Sterling Silver Jewelry Shining for Years to Come

Routine sterling silver care is important to keep your jewelry looking its best. Here are expert tips for gorgeous, long-lasting shine. Whether you're a timeless jewelry fan or keeping up with the hottest trends, sterling silver is incredibly versatile and straight-up glamorous. While buying beautiful jewelry is exciting, nothing ruins the mood more than the inevitable tarnish that silver acquires over time. But, no worries! I'm here to show you that sterling silver care is quick, easy, and convenient. You just need to know the right techniques.

Keep Your Silver Dry

  • Shower- Silver likes to be dry, so remove your jewelry prior to showering, or if you forget, no worries, just make sure to dry it thoroughly right after.

  • Swimming Pool or Hot Tub- Chlorine is a harsh chemical that causes corrosion of silver, so always remove your jewelry prior to swimming.

  • Exercise or Sports- Always remove your silver prior to sweat inducing activities, as salts in perspiration can cause silver to corrode.

Store Your Silver Properly

  • Air Exposure- Yes, exposure to air tarnishes silver over time! When it's not being worn, store it in plastic or fabric baggies, specifically those with anti-tarnish properties.

  • Scratching- Never pile or bunch your jewelry together for storage. Store each piece individually to avoid contact with other jewelry that can rub against it.

  • Travel- Special protective cases for travel will keep your jewelry safe from not only the elements, but all the bumping, tangling, scratching that results from being on the go.

Avoid Exposure to Chemicals

  • Cleaning Products- Chemicals from cleaning products can be extremely damaging to sterling silver jewelry. Always remove your jewelry prior to cleaning activities where chemical sprays are used.

  • Skin Care Products- Chemicals in skin and hair care products such as perfumes and hairsprays can cause your jewelry to tarnish and corrode. Always put your jewelry on last, after allowing a few minutes for these products to dry.

Polish, Polish, and Polish Some More

  • Silver is delicate, and, despite our best efforts, it can still get tarnished. Fortunately, a quick polishing will bring back the shine.

  • Use a cotton or microfiber cloth specifically for jewelry and wipe the tarnished areas in long strokes.

  • For detailed areas that are hard to clean, try a Q-tip to get into the small nooks and crannies.

  • Have hard to remove tarnish? Make a paste of 1 part baking soda to 2 parts water and scrub gently with a toothbrush.

Proper care is necessary for all fine jewelry. Remember that preventative care is always better than AFTER care. When following these recommended tips, sterling silver jewelry care is quite easy, and you will enjoy your favorite jewelry pieces for years to come!
